17 Sire And Son

Hope

Finding herself standing in front of a Draconian incubator, Hope peered through the viewing portal. The incubator was shaped like a large glass egg, and Larok’s little one was lying on a small heating pad, gnawing at his fist, much like a human infant would. He had his father’s coloring and big dark eyes. Excitement slammed through her body.

“This was your big secret?”

“Yes.”

“Aww, he’s the most adorable baby I’ve ever seen!”

Larok had been strangely quiet since they woke and had breakfast. He’d suggested that they visit the Draconian equivalent of a nursery. It honestly hadn’t occurred to her to wonder if there were children on the ship. It now seemed like a serious oversight. If there was a queen and breeders, naturally there would be little ones.

Peering down at her, he asked, “You like the look of my little one?”

“Heck yea, he’s freaking perfect. He even has little horns. When can we hold him?”

“He can come out today for a short interval. I will open the unit if you wish.” After running his finger over the biometric lock, he pulled the front of the unit down. “It pains my soul that I was not able to be present for his shell-breaking ceremony. It happened while we were doing battle with the Zelerian ship. I am told the caregivers captured a vid of it for us to watch.”

Seeing Larok with his son for the first time was sweet. The big warrior was so gentle and careful with the little newborn. Hope crowded close. “He’s really cute, like his father. He’s got your coloring, and those tiny wings are adorable.”

“Our young always bear a strong resemblance to their sire, my queen.”

“May I hold him?” Folding both of her hands together in front of her, she begged. “Please, just for a minute. I’ll be really careful.”

“I suppose. We take our young out for short intervals to hold them but he must go back in the chamber afterwards.”

Once he had the little one in his arms, Larok seemed reluctant to let go of him. Hope couldn’t help but tease him a little. “Don’t be greedy with our son, babe. I’m dying to hold him.” Trying to be funny only earned her a frown. Too excited to care, she carefully took the little one and laid him on her chest. “My goodness, he’s so tiny and sweet. I hope he doesn’t have to stay in the wall too much longer. That’s no kind of life for baby.”

“Our young are fragile for the first few days after they break out of their shell. When my little one has done his time, he’ll be all the stronger for it.”

Running one finger around his tiny jawline, she couldn’t keep the smile off her face. “When he’s ready, can we take him to our quarters?”

“Yes, if you wish. Normally, we have specially trained warriors who care for a warrior’s hatchling.”

“Why would we want some strange warrior caring for our child? The whole point of having a child is for us to enjoy raising him.
